My rib cage rattled against my heart, thumping in endless beats. I screamed in silent pain as the bitter, piercing water surrounded my body. The currents pulled me alongside it's anger, it’s lies, every single ounce of hatred it held within, yelling it’s bloody words into my barren skin.

Strands of my hair rapped around my neck as I clawed at my throat.  The serene air I once held was now floating away in hopeless bubbles. I kicked the invisible demon beneath me, praying that I had injured the source of this hell. My chest tightened and my eye lids began to fall.

Flinging my limbs around me, I searched for the surface of the water. Yet, my sore heart could not carry on. The everlasting sleep was approaching…

Something grabbed my arm.

This massive, obscure object pulled me through the water with miraculous speed. My nose touched the tip of the surface, and then my entire body was shivering in the midnight breeze. As my legs swayed with the wind, my eyes slowly started to adjust to the darkness. Before I could catch a glance, I was gently placed onto the shore of the eerie, grim water.

And then, I was silenced.

A glorious tree leaned over me, it’s limbs danced alongside the wind. One of it’s immense roots slid back into it’s place beneath the ground. My lips parted as I gasped, realizing what had pulled me out of the furious current. I ran my hand up and down my arm, searching for any wounds from the bark. I was whole, not one once of blood was loss.

“No,” my scratchy throat whispered, “It’s… It’s not… possible.” I crawled over to the trunk of the tree, lifting up my hand to touch it’s impossibly smooth bark.

Light cracked through the midnight shadow, sweeping away the wickedness. Swarms of ravishing doves soared above me head, dropping white roses from their beaks. I glanced at my palm resting against the tree. My weak bones were alive once more.  Lifting my chin up to the heavens, I closed my eyes and raised my arms. My tongue danced beneath my lips, finally opening to a gently whisper…

"And like autumn turns leaves, winter will breathe..."

I quite love the ending of this...
And, as always, ravishing use of adjectives; the entire thing is brilliant.

"There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives."

"Of all the bells rung from a thousand steeples, none rings truer than this."
:iconinnocent-shiver:
Thank you, dear -
I appreciate that very much!

As metaphors go, one in particular popped out right away. It was the tree root that saved this girl. Like how our "roots" (meaning family and where we come from) can save us from time to time. My brother has "pulled me out" of some tough spots. I like to think it ties in with your piece here.

Exactly - and,
The roots within one's self.
